‘The Human Race’ is an Amazing Picture (Review)

Written by: Matt Molgaard

An entirely unforgiving study of the human mind and mankind’s instinctual drive to – at all costs – survive, The Human Race is a battering ram of a film, bowling right over all expectations and shattering all preconceptions you may have had in regards to the film. The truth is, it’s insanely savage, and it’s insanely savage because it has to be.

The idea behind the film initially appears simple. A Los Angeles city block experiences a strange whiteout. Moments later roughly 100 strangers are cast in a live-action game of life and death. It’s a race, and only one single soul can win this game. These people are forced to run an unorthodox course while dealing with a slew of fatal rules. Get lapped twice, you’re dead. Step on the grass, you’re dead. Attempt to hide and wait it all out and, of course, you’re dead. Makes for a merciless game no doubt, and the fact that each and every one of these strangers are suddenly trapped in a situation that no one could ever foresee leads to sheer pandemonium. Let’s just say that a whole hell of a lot of heads are going to explode. But, the real question is this: What becomes of the lone victor? A stunning climax answers that question.

There are some amazing performances to admire here, with a few relatively unknown thespians that are certainly going to surprise (one-time Big Brother star, Eddie McGee is particularly impressive). The story while initially a tad confusing quickly works itself out, and the special effects are a thing of true beauty. Jaw dropping right from the jump, The Human Race is the kind of film that identifies, isolates and completely wrangles the attention. Turn this one on and you’re not going anywhere until the final credits run.

Amazing picture.

Rating: 4.5/5
