An interesting title, an even more interesting movie. This is a beautifully constructed film done in a way reminiscent of film noir. Set in Bad City, Iran there is a dark gritty edge to the surroundings; as though we have taken a step back in time, and yet there is also a futuristic element that makes you wonder where exactly are we.
The film tells the tale of a lonely girl who happens to be a vampire. As she walks the streets night after night, preying upon the undeserving she chances upon a boy. A boy who touches her like no other. The girl (Vand), and the boy, Arash (Marandi) fall into an unlikely relationship. Interwoven in this dark budding romance is the life of a prostitute named Atti (Marno), with whom the girl has an odd friendship with; and then there is Arash”s daily dealings with a father (Manesh) who is addicted to heroin. Talk about a recipe for disaster!
Such a well crafted story of subtle horror and loneliness; you’ll find yourself pulling for those considered undesirable by society’s standards. The story sucks you in and doesn’t let go, even when the credits roll you’ll find yourself wanting more. I should mention that this is sub-titled, the language spoken is Persian. But, oh you don’t need to understand the spoken word as the emotion shown is so raw, so real. The soundtrack is perfect, as it winds itself through the storyline, creating an otherworldly, seductive atmosphere. Oh, and do pay attention to the skeleton girl, it is none other than Ana Lily Amirpour!
I don’t think I need to say, I loved this film! Check out the trailer below, see the movie (now on Netflix) and let me know your thoughts!
