The 8 Best Zombie Movies On Netflix

Written by: Wesley Thomas

Are zombie flicks your thing? Has The Walking Dead awakened a love within you for walkers? Because Netflix has a pretty fine selection of flesh eater movies. Here are what I feel are the best.

State Of Emergency

Chaos consumes a small town when a chemical facility explodes releasing a deadly toxin. Moments after the leak, the town’s residents show signs of mutation, causing the military to quarantine the area leaving any survivors helpless and trapped inside. An excellent movie and one of my faves. I love the fact that the zombies can run. A running zombie is far more terrifying than a slow lurching one!

Dead Snow

A 2009 Norwegian zombie splatter film that centers on a group of students surviving a Nazi zombie attack in the mountains of Norway. Huge score for Norway with this one. Proof that they can create remarkable horror. Both entertaining and unnerving.

Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead

Everything that was amazing about Tommy Wirkola’s first Dead Snow film is amplified here. Red vs. Dead ratchets up the gore, the comedy and the outlandish action. It’s rare to see a sequel outshine its predecessor, but in this case, that’s exactly what happened. Masterpiece!

Wyrmwood: Road Of The Dead

Barry is a talented mechanic and family man whose life is torn apart on the eve of a zombie apocalypse. His sister, Brooke, is kidnapped by a sinister team of gas-mask wearing soldiers & experimented on by a psychotic doctor. While Brooke plans her escape Barry goes out on the road to find her & teams up with Benny, a fellow survivor – together they must arm themselves and prepare to battle their way through hordes of flesh-eating monsters in a harsh Australian bushland. Quirky, unusual and limitless in its appeal. I genuinely enjoyed this one, despite it being different in a variety of ways from other horrors and zombie flicks. An original in the zombie genre.

The Returned

In a world where a deadly zombie virus has infected mankind, a single cure has been found. The cure, a treatment called the “Return Protein” which stays the effects of the virus in its host. With injections every 36 hours, the “Returned” are able to live as though they were never bit, despite the virus still coursing through their veins. When it is discovered that the protein stock is running low, chaos hits the streets. Returned who run out of the protein turn to zombies and wreak havoc, protesters turn to murderers as they try to rid the streets of the returned. An excellent zombie thriller, with a kind of realistic approach to how one would imagine a cure would work, and the fatal repercussions to be considered if the cure was ever to become extinct.

The Horde

Simply put. An end of the world battle between gangsters, cops and zombies. Nothing more to it. And while that may sound simple. The action, effects, and characters more than make up for the basic plot. Which as it turns out, is hiding surprises.

Gradually becoming a classic in the zombie arena, adored by many horror and zombie loving fans. Contracted is a 2013 American horror thriller film. A young woman finds herself suffering from a mysterious sexually transmitted disease after a traumatic rape. I have to agree with the majority of horror lovers, this is extraordinary. Taking an unfortunate common occurence in the world and making it even more traumatic by giving the rape victim a little more than an STD. Not an easy watch, but a great one!

Shock-jock radio D.J. Grant Mazzy has, once again, been kicked off the Big City airwaves and now the only job he can get is the early morning show at CLSY Radio in the small town of Pontypool, which broadcasts from the basement of the small town’s only church. What begins as another boring day of school bus cancellations due to yet another massive snow storm quickly becomes deadly. Bizarre reports start piling in of people developing strange speech patterns and committing horrendous acts of violence. Now this was compelling. Rather than seeing all the blood, guts and gore, we hear it. We are forced to imagine what it really would be like if the zombie apocalypse did happen, and how the radio would find out mid-breakout. From start to finish we are unsettled, and concerned for the radio folk’s safety.

  1. The Dead Snows, Contracted, and Pontypool all took me by surprise. I saw the Dead Snows for the first time sometime in the fall and was begging my fiancee, mom, and sister to buy them for me for Christmas. Glad to say they are part of my collection and definite favorites. Netflix is a little treasure trove of gore and horror!
