‘Curve’ is Pleasantly Surprising (Review)

Written by: Wesley Thomas

Directed by: Iain Softley

Cast: Julianne Hough, Teddy Sears, Penelope Mitchell

I was pleasantly surprised at this movie. Although it had a 4.5 star rating on Netflix and generally good reviews, I was still hesitant. I was fearful that it would simply be a rip-off of ‘Hitchhiker’. But it was a completely different storyline and far worse level of torture, in my opinion. It was refreshing, with some excellently gory scenes that have you gagging!

So Mallory (Julianne Hough – Dancing With The Stars) is traveling in preparation for her wedding. On the way, she happens to have her car malfunction and finds help from a hitchhiker. Feeling grateful, she offers him a ride. A ride that she will regret.

In a crazy attempt at fleeing the madman after his true colours become apparent, they end up in a car wreck. It is what happens next that makes the movie interesting. Survival instincts cut in, forcing her to act irrationally, and risk life and limb to escape!

I have to say I was impressed with Julianne Hough. Who would have thought a girl who is a fine dancer, wears fake tan and sparkly dresses, could star in a graphic horror flick and do justice to the part? There are parts in the film where you feel incredibly sorry for this poor girl, then other moments you are cringing in disgust at the actions she has to take in order to survive.

Then we have a more seasoned actor who plays the demented hitchhiker Christian (Teddy Sears). Some may recognize him from season 1 of American Horror Story, The Flash, Torchwood and so on. He brought a level of sinister to the role that it needed. His taunting, emotional torture and mental abuse is far worse than anything physical. Oh and he isn’t too bad to look at.

There are multiple appeals for this movie. It isn’t just a horror, but a survival movie, suspense, and psychological thriller. The pace of the movie jumps from slow to fast in a heartbeat, keeping us on our toes throughout.

So, for those who have a strong stomach, enjoy the psychology of both a killer and how one survives in hopeless odds, and like to be tense and shocked, then head over to Netflix, grab some popcorn, and enjoy!

Rating: 4/5
