After a rocky stretch, horror is back on top of the box office.
The Conjuring 2 opened on 3,343 screens and managed to take the number one slot while raking in $40 million domestically. The foreign haul proved lucrative as well: another $50 million in tickets were sold on the international market.
The film comfortably beat out the other two major releases this weekend, Warcraft and Now You See Me 2. Warcraft took the second spot with a $24 million mark and Now You See Me 2 slid safely in third with sales tallies of $23 million.
You all know what this means. The Conjuring 2 is already a bona fide success story. Shot on a $40 million budget, The Conjuring 2 has already easily recovered costs. It’s also earning unanimous praise among pundits, which is certainly going to help in any potentially dramatic sales plummets. It’s a prize for Warner, and the fans are screaming it.
The Conjuring, as you may remember opened in July of 2013 to the tune of $41 million. The picture would eventually go on to sell $137 million in domestic sales with an additional $180 million from the international market.
Don’t be shocked when The Conjuring 2 topples the $140 million mark in the states.
