The San Diego Comic-con tends to produce a staggering wealth of genre news. Some of it may tickle your funny bone, while some of the announcements will fly right past your head, not a care to reach up and snatch that information.
This however, is information that no fan wants to see slide through their fingers. Why? Because we now know that an Evil Dead 4 isn’t anywhere close to dead in the water, in fact, it may very well become a reality soon, assuming Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead continues to impress and pull down big viewership numbers.
But don’t take our word for it, accept the declaration from a respected individual in the business.
According to executive producer Rob Tapert, Evil Dead 4 is far from being a buried idea.
“Nothing’s off the table,” Tapert said. “We’re thinking about what that could be, and who that would please. Sam [Raimi] talked for many years, teasing the world that we were going to make ‘Evil Dead 4’. And that kind of turned into a TV series. Now Bruce [Campbell] and I are going, ‘Well, there’s a possibility of a movie here.’ So there could be one. Anyways, we’ll see what happens.”
But what a lot of fans have on their minds is Army of Darkness. How does Army of Darkness fit into this increasingly appealing painting of Ash and the Deadites?
Tapert has an explanation for that, as well.
“So, ‘Army of Darkness’ is owned by MGM, and we just never had a chance to properly reference it in the first season,” Tapert explained. “I read somebody’s online thing, ‘Oh look, they’re only pulling from these two [‘Evil Dead’] movies.’ This season, we do bring up Ash’s events in ‘Army of Darkness’, and reference it. It was more that there wasn’t a place for it in our storytelling that we needed to talk about that. If he started blabbing to these shop clerks about, ‘Yeah, I went back to the Middle Ages and did all these things,’ [it would just be exposition]. But that is in his memory bank, and he’s going to pull it out at the appropriate time.”
So, let’s just summarize things in extremely truncated form: Evil Dead 4 stands a fair chance to see release, eventually, and yes, Ash will indeed find a way to reference the occurrences of Army of Darkness in Ash vs Evil Dead.
No matter how you slice it, this is great news for the franchise. Thus far Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead has been a blast, and if it has exceeded expectations, pulling down respectable numbers, the thought of an Evil Dead 4 seems more likely to happen than not.
We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out this insane trailer for season two of Ash vs Evil Dead!
