Shane Black Talks ‘Monster Squad’ Sequel!
Actor, writer, director, Shane Black, who’s working at gifting us a new, special Predator flick recently sat down with IGN for a chat, and during said chat, some interesting thoughts surfaced.
What if we got a Monster Squad sequel, the story taking place decades after the first with the same performers we came to love returning for a delayed rematch with the nasty clan that Dracula ruled over in the original film, a la Stephen King’s It? That’d be an awesome idea, right?
Shane Black, who co-wrote The Monster Squad with Fred Dekker (who’s co-writing the new Predator film with Black), thinks it would be a pretty cool idea. We’re inclined to agree!
Check out what Black told IGN!
“When you say the kids are grown-up the first thing I go to is the movie, or the book really, It by Stephen King, which is about kids who fight monsters when they’re young, then as grown-ups they’re sort of beckoned and they have to return to their childhood hometown. And I think that’s kind of close to what you’re saying in a way. I don’t know how you would distance yourself from that.”
He continued “It would be interesting to have two movies – one The Monster Squad, and one The Monster Squad and they’re 30 years apart and so are the kids; the characters have aged. As long as people understood that’s what we’re doing, I think that could be fun. That’s a good idea!”
Now, that’s obviously not an announcement of any sort, but you can’t deny that it would be extremely cool to check out a sequel, or any return to the story, to be honest. The Monster Squad has become one of the most beloved films of the 80s, and it’s also one of those rare properties that hasn’t been tampered with.
We’d be game for a Monster Squad 2, Shane. Make it happen, for the love of nostalgic brilliance!
