4 Nancy – A Nightmare on Elm Street 3

After surviving a harrowing war with Freddy Krueger in the initial A Nightmare on Elm Street, we all knew that Nancy’s days among the living were numbered. Great scream queens can only survive so long. Unfortunately for Nancy, her demise came after just two appearances inside of three films.

Dream Warriors, the third pic in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series remains one of the high water marks of the franchise. It was clever, and, in a subtle way, a little meta. It also featured some of the greatest special effects seen since John Carpenter’s The Thing, and a supporting cast that fans could really get behind.

As we watched the film, we knew what was headed our way, as it was abundantly clear that Patricia Arquette’s Kristen Parker was being groomed to emerge as the final girl. Patricia is great and all, but damn did I not want to see Nancy fall to the seemingly immortal monster of nightmares, Freddy Krueger.

That’s exactly what happened. And though Heather Langenkamp would return to the franchise for Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, the death of Nancy Thompson really, really stung. Nancy, keep in mind, was viewed by many to be the first true scream queen since Jamie Lee Curtis.
