‘Goosebumps’ Sequel is a Go, but is Jack Black Going to Sign the Dotted Line?
While many picked at the juvenile nature of Goosebumps and the outlandish visual effects, I actually loved Goosebumps for what it was. And it was exactly what it wanted to be; which is something you don’t necessarily see all that often these days.
Financially the movie performed pretty well, earning $150 million worldwide against a $58 million budget, so a sequel seemed a possibility. But now knowing that Sony has not only given the approval but lined up a release date of January 26, 2018, there’s basically no chance this doesn’t happen, and that’s great news for those of us who enjoyed the first film.
Rob Letterman is set to return to the helm for the sequel and screenwriter Darren Lemke will also return to keep the sequel in line with the franchise launcher.
The only mystery hanging in the air at this time is the question of whether Jack Black will return to reprise the role of R.L. Stine, or not. It’s hard to imagine Black passing on quite a few more millions of dollars and another quality film to add to the résumé. And, come on, he wouldn’t do that to the franchise… (Would he?) it would all feel so wrong sans Black, who was absolutely born to play Stine.
