Mystery of the Day: The ‘Patient Zero’ Trailer

Patient Zero

So by now, if you peruse genre outlets daily, you’ve likely heard the word that Screen Gems has pulled Patient Zero from its 2017 release slot. It’s not the first time the film has been delayed, but it could be the final time it’s delayed for quite a while, as it seems it will take a miracle to push this flick in the direction of the masses.

But there are some interesting things going on with this flick, or the trailer… or both.

We don’t entirely know, just yet.

Some time back a trailer went live for the film. And the trailer looks admittedly cool. There aren’t a lot of marquee faces to be found in the promotional cut, but the story behind said cut is compelling… and a bit different than what most would expect when reading a synopsis of Patient Zero.

In fact, let’s get to that synopsis:

In the pandemic thriller, Patient Zero, humanity is battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral super-strain. After being bitten, human survivor Morgan (Matt Smith) realizes he is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected, leading the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure.

Sounds cool enough. The problem? It doesn’t sound like anything we see from the supposed trailer in existence.

In the trailer we get a look at a young man financially struggling to make his way in a big city. His answer to earning a quick buck? Subjecting himself to medicinal trials, which as history has proven, can lead to some horrifying occurrences and subsequent tales, generally direct results of “test drugs” side effects. And these side effects take over our young attractive study in horrifying fashion, as he essentially becomes Patient Zero through this method, and the beginning of what promises to be a paralyzing pandemic that leaves the “infected” still somewhat intelligent, but ruthless in a murderous way.

To be honest, I’m far more interested in this story as opposed to that proposed by the synopsis we shared with you above.

I want to follow the tribulations of the character we see in this trailer far more than I care about a man who can communicate with the infected. I’m also quite drawn to the fact that these are fresh faces, and not firmly established performers. It holds a certain mystery that has me quite excited.

But this trailer doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the actual Screen Gems film. So, what the hell is it? What film is actually being promoted here? Is it an extremely well-made fan trailer? Or is this a film we may soon see under an entirely different title?

I want you to take a look at the trailer. Does it look familiar? Do you know who these performers are? Do you know what the film is? Is there any legit relation to Patient Zero?

Please, if you’ve got information, don’t hesitate to hit our comments section and help to educate us, because at this point, the mystery is driving a few of us up the wall!

  1. It may not exactly be what’s on the reel to reel in your head, but the trailer looks like a promo for the first 25 minutes of the film you featured in print. I mean that last grab/bite from Abacrombie& Fitch guy ( is everyone on earth a Gap model?) looks more bite than “yo bro” hug…I just saying

    • No, the official film is about patient zero who is capable of speaking the language of the infected, a point that doesn’t even exist in this trailer, and the synopsis for the official film seems to tell us nothing of this struggling kid who tries an experimental drug (another aspect not mentioned in the synopsis, and not so much as hinted at in any promo in fact it’s hinted that he doesn’t become infected in this manner at all) then there’s the fact that not one of these individuals in the trailer are credited in the film per imdb (I cross referenced all performers, none of which are the main kid in the trailer, his love interest is not credited either, nor his co=worker or the doc who prescribes the medicine). It’s as if this is a COMPLETELY different film. I’ve got a handful of direct emails out, and no one has yet been able to provide any clarity there, either. It’s a weird one here, and I haven’t been able to get to the bottom of it yet, unfortunately.
