Well those “throw it at the wall and see if it sticks” sometimes brilliant, other times not so much, folks at Netflix have really done it this time! I have to be a bit cautious, as I’m still light headed by the fact that I’ve just seen the premiere of the brand new VOD series, THE SANTA CLARITA DIET. After hearing very positive buzz, I was a bit trepidatious about expectations being too high, I’ve been dealing with a lot of horror disappointment in 2017 so far.
Well I needn’t have worried. This new, hysterically funny, ridiculously gory, stylish, brilliantly written, directed and especially acted, top of the line oddball has a pedigree any horror film fan could love. The brainchild of edgy T.V. comedy vunderkind Victor Fresco (BETTER OFF TED, ANDY RICHTER CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE) with several episodes directed by visionary Reuben Fleischer (ZOMBIELAND) need I say more?
Alright, I will. In sunny California, an oddly off-kilter family (a couldn’t possibly be better) leading man, Timothy Olyphant and his equal in every way wife Drew Barrymore (…I know!) and their dry as dust dead-pan daughter (phenom, Liv Hewson) are living a very non-typically typical life. The couple are attempting to start a Realtor business and during their first showing, a vomit joke to rival MONTY PYTHON’S MEANING OF LIFE sets the tone for what basically becomes a roller coaster to HORROR COMEDY heaven!
To say much more will take away the delightfully disgusting surprises waiting around nearly every corner. With a GOOD as gold supporting cast (particularly the next door neighbor teenage horror expert Skylar Gisando- holding his own with spot on reactions and comedic rhythms) a list of some truly great guest stars (such as a SO damn GOOD I wanted him to be a regular Nathan Fillion as a scumball competitor to Olyphant and Barrymore, who by the way has become a fresh meat eating only ZOMBIE !!!- see what I mean?)
This is as fresh and funny (and grotesque) as ASH VS. THE EVIL DEAD… if it were written by Woody Allen. The combination of the phenomenal cast, truly witty, sometimes laugh out loud funny writing and complete what will they do next? tone of the show is practically intoxicating. With STRANGER THINGS and now this gem, Netflix has mined its way into an entertainment GOLD MINE…can’t wait for more… I’m just saying
