What’s Coming to Amazon Prime in August

By Lois Kennedy

Love Amazon Prime’s cheap shipping? How bout them movies? Amazon Prime has a fair selection of horror movies (especially if you have Shudder–it’s only $5 a month, folks). There’s not a whole lot coming in August, but here’s what there is.

August 1st

The Dead Zone (1983)

dead zone

Director: David Cronenberg

Cast: Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Martin Sheen, Herbert Lom, Tom Skerritt

Stephen King meets David Cronenberg! Plus Christopher Walken! If you’re unfamiliar with the plot, Walken plays Johnny, a guy who wakes up from a coma with psychic powers. He sees that a popular presidential candidate will destroy the world, and has a difficult choice to make regarding stopping him.

Eve’s Bayou (1997)

eve's bayou

Director: Kasi Lemmons

Cast: Lynn Whitfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Jurnee Smollett, Meagan Good

You may recognize the name Kasi Lemmons as the actress who plays the sassy best friend in The Silence of the Lambs and Candyman. Turns out she’s a kickass director, too. This movie is seriously gorgeous. Eve is a young girl whose sister tells her their philandering father raped her, and Eve curses him–with disastrous results.

Here’s a review I wrote a while back.

Far from Home (1989)

far from home

Director: Meiert Avis

Cast: Drew Barrymore, Matt Frewer, Richard Masur, Susan Tyrrell, Dick Miller, Jennifer Tilly

If you can’t tell by the above picture, it’s 1989! Joleen and her father Charlie are on a road trip and become stranded at a trailer park. Soon after, a killer starts preying on the tenants. There are lots of familiar faces from the world of horror.

Once Bitten (1985)

once bitten

Director: Howard Storm

Cast: Jim Carrey, Lauren Hutton, Cleavon Little, Karen Kopins

This one’s more of a horror “comedy”. A very young Jim Carrey plays Mark, a guy who’s so desperate to get laid (despite having a girlfriend) that he goes home with a woman who turns out to be a vampire. She bites him, which starts the process of turning him into a vampire. The clock is ticking for Mark’s friends and his girlfriend to stop it. The trailer’s below, but first, here’s the most 1985 four minutes you’ve ever seen:

Here’s a review I wrote a while back:

In the second film, Jigsaw traps a group of 8 people this time, who again have to figure out a series of puzzles and brave dismemberment to get out alive. (Remember this is the one when Amanda has to dive into a pile of used needles?)

Saw III (2006)

saw 3

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

In the third film, a doctor is brought in against her will to help with Jigsaw’s cancer. Meanwhile, a man who lost his son is faced with the people who were in some way responsible for the car accident that killed him–he has the choice to help them or let them die as well.

Saw IV (2007)

saw 4

saw 5

Look, it’s Meagan Good from Eve’s Bayou, Eve’s Bayou, Eve’s Bayou…

Director: David Hackl

Cast: Costas Mandylor, Meagan Good, Betsy Russell, Scott Patterson, Julie Benz

Even Darren Lynn Bousman has bailed on the series by now. This one focuses mostly on Detective Hoffman and yet another group of people forced to do gruesome blah blah blah.

August 19

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

my bloody valentine

Director: George Mihalka

Cast: Paul Kelan, Lori Hallier, Neil Affleck, Peter Cowper

After a major accident during a Valentine’s Day party in a mine, a small town is too afraid to have another one. But twenty years later they do, and the murders begin. Is it the angry miner who survived and vowed revenge if ever there was another Valentine’s Day party?

Happy watching, peoples!

About GhoulieJoe (169 Articles)
I wuvs the horror movies and like to write snarky reviews about them. I also included some pretentious as hell microfiction (don't worry, it's at the bottom).
