Amazing ‘Stranger Things’ and the Movies You Have to Watch on Netflix Right NOW!

Slasher

Full disclosure: Chiller’s new series, Slasher loses some steam beyond the fourth or fifth episode. The ship doesn’t sink by mid-season, but it ceases to speed over the tumultuous waves as is the case through the first few episodes. It doesn’t barrel toward conclusion, we can tell you that. Just the same, there’s something appealing about the series, and slasher fans aren’t likely to find themselves too disappointed with what I’d call a generally inspired little series.

If you’ve spent your adulthood living in a nostalgic bubble, fond memories of The Goonies, E.T., Stephen King’s It and other such Amblin-esque adventures sticking to your bones, Stranger Things is the show for you. It’s such a beautiful homage to the 80s that, from time to time you might just forget you’re not actually watching an 80s production. There’re some excellent performances, commendable visuals and a few tremendous talents affixed to this project. If you’ve been looking for something to welcome your kids into the genre mix, this is a perfect pick.

Holidays

Have you been on the prowl for a new, truly entertaining anthology? Directors Anthony Scott Burns (Darknet), Kevin Kolsch (Starry Eyes), Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact), Adam Egypt Mortimer (Some Kind of Hate), Ellen Reid, Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Kevin Smith (Tusk), Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim), Scott Stewart (Legion) and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) have you covered. Holidays hasn’t been universally praised, but it’s a really creative picture that not only delivers dedicated pieces to some of the more rare seasons out there, it also feels unlike any other anthology pic I’ve seen in quite some time.

The Houses October Built

This absurdly unsettling found fiction piece attempts to break the mold, abandons a good deal of the clichés you might expect to see and gives us a story we actually haven’t seen in the subgenre. There are no paranormal beings stalking homes or hospital halls. There are no possessions to scoff at. No zombies here, either. This one keeps the action steadily sailing forward as the protagonists stay on the move, seeking out the darkest of roadside attractions, which leads to a twisted and murderous game of cat and mouse. You may have seen it panned by a few critics, but The Houses October Built is a film that you have to check out for yourself. I know this, because I had next to zero hopes for the film, only to be extremely surprised. It’s a spirited film.
