Amazing ‘Stranger Things’ and the Movies You Have to Watch on Netflix Right NOW!
The Babadook
I won’t harp on this one too much, as it received more than its fair dose of acclaim upon initial arrival. However, even if it’s become the “cool” thing to move against the grain and bash this one, simply to frustratingly counter the positive hype, I can tell you that it really is a strong flick. If you’ve found yourself avoiding it because you’re already sick of it without even seeing it, I’d urge you to step out on a limb and chance it. You’ll find that limb offers the security of a redwood log.
The Invitation
A slow burn thriller that eventually takes a shockingly effective turn in the direction of horror, The Invitation rocks. It rocks because it places character examination at the forefront of things, so we quickly find ourselves invested in a few performers. But the buildup can’t go ignored, because it’s stellar. It feels nothing like the typical slow burn that has you bored at the 45-minute mark before eventually getting (drowsy and battling to make it to the climax) to the final 15 explosive minutes. No, there’s something special to this piece and Logan Marshall-Green offers what may be his strongest performance to date.
Darling
If artistic films that consistently employ tactics that scream avant garde are your thing, you just might find yourself declaring Darling one of the year’s absolute best. The nice thing about this story of an awkward lass who finds herself plummeting toward a maddening depth all but guaranteed to see her existence entirely consumed, is that it feels very atypical when compared to the “hot” films on the market. Even the artsy ones. Fear not, this is an engaging piece of work, and it even affords us a look at genre familiars Larry Fessenden and Sean Young. I won’t toss any spoilers your way, but I’ll tell you right now, you’re not going to be bored or turned off by the disturbing narrative and sometimes shocking – in a realistic way – story.
Deathgasm
A modern day love song dedicated to Sam Raimi and his Evil Dead films with a hat tip to Heavy Metal, Deathhgasm was a top 5 film of 2015. It’s loaded with plenty of high caliber gore scenes and a lovable story that pays tribute to a few vintage pieces all the while looking closely enough at the primary characters and allowing a young group of thespians to absolutely shine. In some ways this is a coming of age tale. In some ways it’s just a story of metal enthusiasts waging war with demons. I’m no heavy metal fan, but being a metal fan isn’t remotely near a requirement to enjoy this one. It’s balls to the wall fun.
