The Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis Dies at 87
Herschell Gordon Lewis was a pioneer of practical gore and a dedicated genre contributor who reveled in his ability to successfully push the envelope time and again. The man inspired countless special effects practitioners, so it weighs heavy on our hearts to announce the legend’s passing. Lewis was 87 years old.
At this point a cause of death remains unknown. The impact that Lewis had on the horror community however, will remain known and respected.
Lewis is likely best known for his extreme films Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs!, A Taste of Blood, The Gruesome Twosome, Scum of the Earth!, She-Devils on Wheels, The Gore Gore Girls and 2002’s Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, the sequel to his ground breaking 1963 effort, the aforementioned Blood Feast.
Herschell Gordon Lewis’ BloodMania is credited as Lewis’ final project, which according to imdb.com, is in post-production.
It’s a sad, sad day for the horror community, as we’ve lost one of the true greats.
