Like The Machinist, Monster isn’t an outright horror flick. It treads a line that separates horror from crime, but there’s plenty of both in the film, which is a big screen telling of the real life serial killer, Aileen Wuornos.

The story is absolutely heartbreaking, as Wuornos was a product of a brutal environment at an early age. She was frequently abused and eventually kicked out of her own home while still just a teenager. She turned to prostitution to keep herself alive, and in doing so, eventually became the serial killer that inspired this emotionally jolting picture.

Charlize Theron, always a stunning woman, underwent an outrageous transformation to play the part. She didn’t just play the part however, she left the world slack-jawed as the transformation left her utterly unidentifiable; Theron became Wuornos, and it left the audience stunned and terrified.

Theron gained 30 pounds to play the role, wore prosthetic teeth and underwent extensive makeup work to totally alter her appearance. Monster remains one of the finest films in history, and Theron’s performance is one that will never be forgotten.
