‘Bite’ and ‘Viral’ Among Today’s Major DVD and Blu-ray Releases

It’s a good week to be a DVD or Blu-ray collector. After a few slow weeks things are beginning to look up. That’s a good thing, as Halloween is edging closer to arrival and the more killer new horror flicks to check out in October, the better.

There are most certainly some killer new (and old, all decked out with solid restoration jobs) horror flicks hitting stands today!

Viral

Teenage sisters Emma (Sofia Black-D’Elia) and Stacey (Analeigh Tipton) live a normal life, until their small suburban neighborhood is stricken with a mysterious parasitic virus. As the disease rapidly spreads throughout the town, the two band together to barricade themselves from infection. But it may already be too late – when the virus enters their home, the sisters are faced with an impossible choice: protect each other, or survive the virus.

Summer Camp

Four American counselors at a European summer camp must deal with the outbreak of a rage-inducing plague among children…

The Suffering

A property appraiser fights for his sanity when he’s trapped on a rural farm inhabited by sinister beings overseen by a mysterious caretaker.

Panzer

On July 21 2012, in the mountains of the Emporda county, near the Spanish border with France, an Archaeology PhD student and three friends, go into a bunker searching for pieces of art supposedly stolen by the Nazis. However, when they open a secret chamber, they only find a few piles of dusty boxes containing small tablets of Panzer Chocolate; which was widely distributed among German soldiers in the 1940’s. Soon, the peaceful lives of the four unlucky friends turn into a scary nightmare, and they find themselves running for their lives.

Observance

Atmospherically creepy and visually unnerving, Australia s Joseph Sims-Dennett’s startling feature film debut follows Parker, a young man in the grip of grief following the death of his young son, his marriage on the rocks and nearing bankruptcy, but who reluctantly returns to work as a private investigator. His assignment it to observe a woman from an abandoned apartment, and as her watches bizarre happenings surrounding her, he slowly becomes aware that the derelict building he is in has a dark presence which slowly threatens to consume him. A frightening horror tale of a man spiraling into madness and reminiscent of Roman Polanski’s The Tenant, Hitchcock’s Rear Window, and the works of David Cronenberg and David Lynch.

The Night Visitor (1971)

A powerful Gothic suspense tale of a man wrongly accused of murder, who is committed to an asylum for the criminally insane. While imprisoned, he makes a series of incredible escapes to methodically wreak vengeance on those responsible for putting him there.

With their numbers dwindling, suspicion and mistrust pit friend against friend in a deadly race against time. At this reunion it doesn t matter what you were voted as in high school… Now everyone is Most Likely To Die!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray)

The first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic moves the setting for the invasion from a small town to the city of San Fransisco and starts as Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different. When questioned later they themselves seem changed as they deny everything or make lame excuses. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted “replacement” realises that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. But who can he trust to help him and who has already been snatched?

Female Werewolf

From indie filmmaker Chris Alexander (Blood for Irina and Queen of Blood) comes Female Werewolf, an intimate psychodrama about one woman’s search for sex and sanity. “She” (Carrie Gemmell) is a girl in the grip of a waking feverish dream, who is a slave to erotic and bloody fantasies that are slowly seeping into the grind of her sterile reality. As her sexual tensions and anxieties spiral, she slips into madness, believing that she might be turning into a monster.

Bite

While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she’s able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite.

Careful What You Wish For

A steamy thriller set in a wealthy vacation community, Careful What You Wish For is a story of seduction, deceit and betrayal.  The summer before he leaves for college a young man (Jonas in his debut lead performance) begins an affair with the beautiful wife (Lucas) of his powerful investment banker neighbor (Mulroney). The plot thickens when a suspicious death embroils the young lovers in scandal.
