‘The Mummy’ Teaser is Here
I’m still not too excited about Universal’s decision to once more reboot their original monster movies. If Universal was approaching the films as horror should be approached, I’d be ecstatic, but instead the powerhouse company will once more take an action-first, horror-second approach to these flicks. That’s extremely evident in the new teaser trailer for The Mummy.
You can get a look at it below. I would encourage you not to assume it’s going to be horrible, as I’ve done. There’s a chance the film impresses, but the female mummy (don’t leap to brand me a misogynist, I just don’t like classic characters being so radically altered) already rubs me the wrong way, and the movie looks like it’s going to be drenched in as much CGI as Stephen Sommers’ cringe-inducing interpretations.
The film stars Sofia Boutella as our mummy Ahmanet. Tom Cruise is the hero Nick Morton and Russell Crowe will play Dr. Henry Jekyll (the only intriguing bit to be produced by this trailer). Annabelle Wallis, Javier Botet, Courtney B. Vance and Jake Johnson star.
Look for the film to hit theaters on June 9th, 2017.
Synopsis: Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
