Universal Pictures Adding Even More Characters to its “Dark Universe” Lineup

This year’s ‘The Mummy’ is just the start of a series of reboots by Universal Pictures of its creature features from the ’30s. ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ starring Javier Bardem as the titular monster has been announced for Valentine’s Day 2019, and Johnny Depp has been confirmed for the Invisible Man. Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde has been introduced in ‘The Mummy’ and will continue as the mastermind linking all the films.

‘Mummy’ director Alex Kurtzman stated: “We know we’re going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man. There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.” When asked what actors are on his wishlist, he responded Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron, and Angelina Jolie.

Meanwhile, ‘The Mummy’ is making respectable numbers at the box office and is predicted to do well internationally. So far the film has had “a record-breaking opening day in Korea.” And of course as long as there is money to be made, the movies will keep on coming.

I'm a mom who loves horror movies, the '80s, and the library. I write about the above three topics more than is healthy. I've got reviews, listicles, lil nonfiction pieces, and random bits of whutnot. I also included some pretentious as hell microfiction (don't worry, it's at the bottom). Because horror is life and vice versa.
