13 More Awesome Found Footage Movies

The Taking of Deborah Logan

The Taking of Deborah Logan is one of the more surprising films out there, and it’s no doubt a unique picture to the found footage subgenre. It’s all about a woman’s struggles as she’s slowly swallowed by Alzheimer’s. But that’s not really all it’s about. This one has a surprise or two in store for viewers, and they’re extremely gratifying surprises. It’s a well-acted film with memorable characters and enough ambition to inspire a purchase. If you missed the 2014 arrival of the flick, catch up – it’s creepy as hell and entertaining from moment one to the final credits.

Creep

Not only is Creep one of the greatest found footage flicks out there, it’s one of the greatest horror movies released in a few decades, period. The realism of the movie is just staggering and the performances of Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass are wonders to behold. The ending isn’t completely unpredictable, but the execution is absolutely perfect, and the fact that the story places real life individuals, like you and I, at the heart of the conflict only makes Creep creepier. Of all the pictures on this list, this may be the only one that simply cannot be missed.

The Houses October Built

Although the Halloween vibe of the movie goes sorely neglected, just about everything else is a success. I’ve seen some mixed opinions on the movie, but clowns have always creeped me out, and haunted attractions have always called my name, which means I couldn’t care less for what others think of the flick. There are two particularly memorable characters in the movie, and those two, coupled with a few insanely jarring scenes separates The Houses October Built from the bulk of the pack. Don’t avoid this one based on a negative review, you just might find yourself surprised by what you get.

Noroi: The Curse

There is absolutely nothing in the way of Hollywood magic here, and that’s a part of Noroi’s allure. Every moment of the movie feels strangely plausible, and although there are a half dozen too many ideas stuffed into the script, the crux of the narrative is disconcerting beyond belief. This is the first film in a good decade to genuinely disturb me, and I couldn’t be happier about that. I’m not going to drop many details, as the only ones I can dump on you would threaten to totally extinguish the fire of a viewing experience, and this is one of those rarities that really shouldn’t be ruined in advance of a look. It feels a little lengthy, but there’s big payoff in store for fans.

Ghost Team One

Ghost Team One stands out for a few different reasons, but the one thing that might inspire some to check it out is the fact that it’s handled as a comedy, nearly exclusively. Are there some chills waiting to catch you off guard? Sure. But it’s the comedy that really sells the movie. And, to directors Ben Peyser and Scott Rutherford’s credit, they do understand how to balance the laughs with the chills. The movie has been severely slept on since arriving, but it doesn’t deserve such treatment. Look into this party gone wrong movie and prepare to laugh, a lot.
