13 More Awesome Found Footage Movies
The Sacrament
The Sacrament isn’t a perfect movie, by any stretch. Its problems are numerous, but if you’re willing to put a lot of potentially personal issues aside, and look past the shine of what should be a far grittier film, you just might get a big kick out of Ti West’s retelling (basically) of the Jonestown tragedy. It’s a challenge to treat the subject material with sensitivity, but West seems to be trying, and he’s not failing on a grand scale, even if the film often treads a bit too long in taboo territory. It’s effective in leaving the viewer disturbed, and it’s effective in creating a terror that isn’t supernatural, which was a big thing for West. I’ve always been on the fence with this one, but it does leave the viewer rather disconcerted, so it gets some big points right there, alone.
Cloverfield
Matt Reeves’ massive monster movie proves to be more impressive than it probably should have been. It’s a high gloss found footage film, which I’ve never been the biggest fan of, as it steals a bit of the potentially organic vibe that should accompany a found footage film, but a fun film is a fun film. Cloverfield is no doubt entertaining and enjoyable. The characters are memorable and there are a few very slick decisions offered up by the script. The creature, or alien, or monster – whatever you choose to call this thing – looks massive and imposing, as it should. For a commercial found footage horror movie, Cloverfield is about as convincing as it gets. Did I mention the iconic Staue of Liberty scene?
The Last Broadcast
Full disclosure: it’s been too damn long since I’ve seen this movie! I’m a fan of movies that attempt to make the Jersey Devil frightening. Few manage to successfully do so, but The Last Broadcast isn’t your run of the mill movie. The details that still feel fresh in the brain aren’t about to be spilled right here, but rest assured, The Last Broadcast is far more impressive than some may lead you to believe. Shot around the same time as The Blair Witch Project, The Last Broadcast is one of the first of its kind. It’s also one of the more enjoyable.
