When the seventh season kicked off, after Negan had bashed some skulls, he took Daryl as “insurance” to help ensure that Rick’s people put up no resistance in giving Negan half of their goods.

That agreement comes back into focus after Daryl attempts to escape Negan’s compound. Negan makes a motion to strike Daryl with Lucille, but he doesn’t. He keeps his insurance alive, and instead allows a good eight Saviors to beat Daryl mercilessly.
