5 Horror Icons Who Never Got A Fair Crack At The Whip
- Djinn (Wishmaster series)
“Once in the time before time, god breathed life into the universe, and the light gave birth to the angels, and the earth gave birth to man, and the fire gave birth to the Djinn, creatures condemned to dwell in the void between worlds, fear one thing in all there is… fear the Djinn”
~ Legend of the Djinn
The Wishmaster hit rocky territory almost from the outset. While the first film in the series wasn’t terrible it was far from great. Thankfully the Djinn rode the waves of mediocrity, effortlessly surfing a sea of horror tropes to give us one of the more interesting and frankly over powered horror villains in the last couple of decades.
His abilities easily rival the likes of Freddy Krueger and Pinhead, though the extent of his powers are held back a little by the fact he can only really use them to grant wishes. But being the master manipulator he is it’s never really held him back. Even with that slight setback he can still revel in his invincibility which he demonstrated by placing a revolver under his chin and blowing the top of his head off, all with his trademark, shark toothed shit eating grin.
Being a villain, he always finds a way to misinterpret any wish made, leading to some fairly horrific scenarios for any one unlucky enough to fall prey to his schemes. Schemes may be putting it a tad lightly, as harvesting souls to power an unholy legion of hellish nightmare creatures is more of a dastardly plot, I suppose.
His goals are simple: after he is released from the fire opal that imprisons him, he will grant three wishes to whomever happened to give him his freedom, and upon granting the third wish legions of Djinn will be unleashed upon the earth. So it’s the usual world domination, though an evil genie apocalypse is somewhat unique in this day and age. It probably wouldn’t be too hard to fight the urge to make a wish when everyone around you has met an untimely and ironic end. Like, I don’t know, maybe you wished for a long and carefree life and as a result you get turned into an oak tree that stands undisturbed for a couple of centuries, or you know, something like that.
I feel the Djinn was never given a fair chance. The first Wishmaster was panned by critics and the reviews only got worse with each of the three sequels. Shame really, seeing as how in the right movie this guy could be awesome.
