VOD Roundup: 10 Best Films Streaming on Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Shudder and Tubi TV
Hulu
Children of the Corn
Another Stephen King classic lands on the list. Children of the Corn was a disconcerting affair. Watching it, even as a relatively young child, really hammered home the idea that power balance can be disturbed in terrible ways. Aside from some of the realizations that slam me in the face while watching the movie, I was also treated to strong performances, terrifying kids and outright savagery. What’s not to love?
Antichrist

Oh man, this movie is so royally screwed up… it’s almost hard to believe what we see within this film. I’m not going to give you the inkling of an idea about this one. What I will do is tell you to watch the movie, but don’t forget your mental fortitude laying around – you’re going to need it.
Room 237
There are a lot of technical issues I take with this film. At times, it feels like a downright amateur picture. But the interesting thing is director Rodney Ascher never really loosens his grip on our curiosity. The picture clearly does some things right when it proves difficult in just looking away. If you’re a big fan of The Shining, you should find something to enjoy in Room 237.
Friday the 13th
Most of the Friday franchise can be caught on a number of different providers right now, but why not throw Hulu some love? They’ve got a solid and diverse list of flicks for us genre fanatics to enjoy, and there’s no reason to steer clear of the film that launched an immensely popular film franchise.
Stand By Me

One of the films on this list that really isn’t a horror film so much as a film with a few horrifying moments. It’s a coming of age piece with triumphs and heart breaks, and the characters are absolutely breath taking. Another marvelous Stephen King adaptation that is all too often forgotten.
Terminator Genisys
A little action, a little sci-fi, a little humor, and a little horror, this film is going to make just about any list highlighting Hulu standouts. Here’s the interesting thing about Genisys, it’s not a flat out terrible film, it’s just flat out terrible by Terminator standards. There are a few good ideas at work here, but there’s also a complete lack of organic connections of natural relationships. In other words, if you’re at least a T-800, you’ll probably get into it. If you’re a T-1000, it’s not going to leave you satisfied.
The Voices
I’ve got to be honest here: I didn’t think Ryan Reynolds could pull off a quirky head case who talks to his pets while forcing the closest thing to a neutral demeanor when out in day-to-day, work-to-work scenarios. But Reynolds does a pretty good job, and the flick ended up being a much stronger piece of film than I’d anticipated.
The Bay
I’m a little bit mystified by films that find a way to kind merge mockumentary and found footage to form not a film so much as a cinematic event. When done right, even without a ton of money, these movies can succeed on a grand level (see Lake Mungo and The Tunnel for two perfect examples) that quickly leads to a loyal fan base. And everything I just said is essentially The Bay, in a nut shell. I had a blast with it, and you may, as well.
The Stanford Prison Experiment
Not an outright horror film, or even a horror film in any traditional sense, truthfully, this one just leaves an ugly little temporary brand on you… you feel strangely filthy by the time the picture concludes, and while I can’t say I’ll go out of my way to watch this flick again, I can in complete honesty admit that it was an interest experiment on me, myself.
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
Hands down the only zom-com to insert itself into the endless ‘all time best’ race between Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is nutty, awesome, outrageous insanity for about 90 minutes straight. It’s hilarious and it has characters to die for. Watch it, immediately.
