John Carpenter’s ‘Escape from L.A.’ Turns 21 Today
John Carpenter’s Escape from L.A. was no Escape from New York. In fact, there are a solid number of Carpenter fans who like to point to this film and declare it Carpenter’s bottom of the barrel effort. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a messy blast of a ride with some delightfully outrageous scenes (how ‘bout them waves, eh?) and priceless dialog.
Whether you’re big on Escape from L.A. or not, it’s celebrating a 21st birthday today!
The film arrived on August 9th, 1996 and it failed to wow audiences, opening in the number three position at the box office with a $8.9 million opening weekend. The film topped out at $25 million domestically without any significant international push.
While the movie certainly isn’t Carpenter’s finest, I’d implore anyone who enjoys the man’s work to – at the very least – give this one a once over!
Addicted to Horror Movies 
I enjoyed the whole movie and still think it was damn good… and had priceless dialogue, too. To me, master Carpenter’s bottom is that thing about the invisible man.
