Stephen King’s ‘It’ Fronting the Charge as Clowns Trend in Horror; 10 Scariest Clown Films in Existence
02 Clownhouse
I know this picture is buried in controversy. I know that the hideous activities that Victor Salva engaged in when the crew had long dispersed, are also unforgivable and repulsive. The man abused a child, and that’s one of a few things you simply do not do.
Now that I got that out of the way, I can’t harp on the effectiveness of this film enough. This is a legitimately chilling piece of work, and there are a number of reasons as to why it all comes together as a sickening symphony of horror. First, three children serve as the film’s protagonists. Second, there’s no comedic relief whatsoever. Third, those two facts conflict in a way that should never work, but does… to perfection.
The clown’s themselves – escaped nut-jobs – are menacing as all hell, and they don’t care if they’re murdering a grown man or a prepubescent child. They simply do not care and feel zero remorse. That dons on us as viewers, and realizing that hits us deep down in our insides. There may be a lot of controversy that surrounds Clownhouse, but that doesn’t make it any less terrifying than it really is.
