Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses really isn’t a clown movie, at all. It just so happens that one of the characters has a propensity to get all decked out, looking like a devious clown. It also just so happens that that clown, one Captain Spaulding is a career defining kind of character that transcends the production as a whole. House of 1,000 Corpses is the Captain Spaulding Show, plain and simple. At some point, likely during the filming process, both Zombie and Sid Haig, who plays Spaulding, probably understood what was happening, because Rob (rightfully) milks this one for all its worth.

An homage piece that some love and some hate, Rob Zombie’s big directorial debut was more success than failure, and whether you’re a fan of the outlandish turn the pic makes during the final act or not, it’s hard to argue Captain Spaulding’s position as one of the most memorable screen creations of the last few decades.
