On This Day in Horror History: The Late, Great Angus Scrimm Was Born

Angus Scrimm of the Phantasm franchise

Angus Scrimm was an established talent with a look so unique he landed some strong roles simply based on his visage and his lengthy build. And, had he not passed away last year, he’d be celebrating a 91st birthday today. Sadly, he didn’t quite make it, as he died in early-2016 from natural causes.

Scrimm will forever be a genre favorite. He was, after all, the iconic Tall Man from the beloved Phantasm franchise. But Scrimm had plenty of non-Phantasm (he played the Tall Man character five times, for the record) genre credits, including I Sell the Dead, Subspecies, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road, Scream Bloody Murder, Chopping Mall, John Dies at the End and Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story, to name but a few.

Scrimm will forever go down in the history books as one of the nicest, yet potentially menacing men in the business. That’s how he loved it, and it’s a large part of why we loved him.

I hope you’ve been resting easy, sir. You’re still very missed on this earth!
